Purchasing liability insurance for a homebuilt airplane is much
like purchasing insurance for any production aircraft. Most insurance
companies will quote on RVs, with the exact premium depending on the
pilot’s total experience, time in type and the other usual
considerations.
Historically, hull insurance has been more difficult to obtain, but
with the significant numbers of RVs now flying, several companies will
readily provide this coverage as well.
Insurance covering the project in the shop, before it reaches
flying status, has been quite difficult to find. Almost no homeowner’s
insurance policy will cover aircraft or aircraft parts. However, a
couple of companies have found it worthwhile to provide this as well.
Naturally, a group of RV builders would provide more buying power.
In fact, we know of two companies that offer and solicit business from
RV builders and promise the benefit of group rates.
In 1999, NationAir Insurance Agencies of Lincoln, NE cooperated
with Van’s to design the VanGuard insurance program. This program
gives the RV builder a wide range of possible coverage's, including a
Builder’s Risk option that covers the project against all
eventualities while it is in the shop. The VanGuard program also
provides the benefits of a large group, and guarantees to meet or beat
competitor’s prices.
SkySmith International,
Ltd. is another aircraft insurance company you may contact for coverage's,
and prices.
